FOI legislation goes to federal parliament

27 November 2009

The federal government has introduced two bills into the lower house that will see government proactively releasing more information to the public, and make it cheaper and easier for individuals to obtain personal information held in government files. A new position of Information Commissioner will oversee a new FOI commissioner and the existing the Privacy Commissioner. This legislation follows recent reforms in Queensland, New South Wales and Tasmania. On ABC Radio National’s The National Interest, Peter Mares discussed the federal reforms with Peter Timmins, a former public servant who publishes an FOI blog.
